New visa requirements from 1st November 2023.

The European Travel Information Authorisation System (ETIAS) is like the ESTA program in the USA, and they have released new visa requirements, 30 countries you’ll need a visa for.

Meaning British citizens will now need a visa to enter Shengen areas, which are made up of 26 EU countries and 4 EFTA countries.

The announced fee is about Β£6.20 (7 euros) and your ETIAS must be granted no later than 96 hours before travel into the shengen area. (check here for updated information.)

This is for all modes of transport, aircraft, coach, sea carrier. The application form can be filed out online and will include some security questions, just like most visa forms and results should be pretty quick.

How long can i stay?

The length of time you can stay has not changed and is still the same at present. At present it stands at 90 days in a 180 day period. If you wish to stay longer you will have to obtain a different visa.

Do i need a new visa for each country?

The ETIAS visa waiver covers you for the countries in the shengen area, so no you do not need a new visa for each country in the shengen area.

The ETIAS fee will also be valid for 3 years. Upon expiry you will need to reapply and pay again if you wish to travel to these countries. Or if you get a new passport.

Countries in the Shengen area are:
